History of British Sports – An Insider’s View into the Nation’s Favourite Sports

soccer None in their right mind could deny the huge influence Great Britain has had on the sports world. By that, I mean impact of international magnitude. So many gentleman’s games that still keep the audience on the edge of their seats have originated in the United Kingdom that a single post won’t be enough to go over all of them in great detail, but it’s worth trying none the less. We sports pundits like to juggle with facts and recite historical dates and fact, but this won’t be one of those articles that would resonate with just a limited audience of passionate fans. Instead, I’ll try to pass on some general knowledge on the matter that will surely serve you well!

Football – the Sport That Affected British Culture for Good

Let’s kick off with a game, that started on a club level and evolved into a worldwide phenomenon. Yes, I’m talking about football, also called ‘soccer’ across the pond. It’s important to note that before the game became what we know today, it went through many transformations. The sport made its mark on the history of British sports by started as an entertainment for the working class, gathering unseen amounts of viewers. Before long the action-packed nature of football, spurred an interest in the sport all across the world, starting in India and South America. Historically, the international football association (FIFA) has played a huge role in the fight against racism in sports and social inequality.

Boxing – the Not So Gentle Gentleman’s Sport

Not only is boxing considered one of the greatest fighting sports (taking into account that it attracts the most viewers of them all), it’s always been one of the hottest topics on the Island. There, pretty much everyone is crazy about the sport. Now deeply embedded into the nation’s culture, the origins of boxing can be traced back to the 15th century when it started as something called prize-fighting. This initial stage was particularly dangerous for the practitioners of the sport because it wasn’t any different than a regular street fight. Boxer Jack Broughton was the first that sought to end the chaotic mauling by introducing 7 clear fighting rules. Thanks to the many reforms that followed, now all fans can enjoy clean, longer and fairer fights.

Cricket – Not Exactly a Child’s Game

Cricket is widely believed to have started as a children’s game somewhere in south-east England. Two decades after, it became the country’ national sport. The sport has become the bone of contention because of claims that it was created in France. Beside the unclear roots of the game, it’s generally agreed on that cricket existed as a children’s game long before it became a professional sport. Surrounded by speculations and mystery, the history of the name is no less interesting. Linguists pinpoint three words as the possible foundation the name could have been derived from. Krick (Middle Dutch) meaning ‘stick’, cricc, or cryce meaning ‘staff’ in Old English. Most likely the name Cricket has been influenced a great deal by the southern English dialects.

UK Sports Betting Tips & Tricks – Pro vs. Newbie Punters

Now it’s finally time for my first regular blog post and I cannot miss the chance to share with you some of the key tips and bits of advice I learned throughout my sports betting adventures. Of course, this is neither a post on what’s the best way to predict the game results nor a recipe on how to ‘get’ lucky. There is simply no such thing as developing a winning sports betting strategy. Check out these tips & tricks, however! For completeness and easier orientation, I’ll subdivide them in two – for the newbie UK punters and for more serious gamblers, respectively grouped in basic and advanced tips.

UK online bettingBasic tip #1: Always consider how much money you can win from the bookmakers. Making bets just for fun or only because you bet on your favourite game is not enough. Of course, sports betting must be fun all the time, but the excitement is greater when you bet £10, £15 or £20 at 35/1 odds or more, and you win.

Basic tip #2: Go for the main and simple bets. This is a great way to start exploring the interface of the sports betting sites, as well as how much to wager and how to calculate the total amount of your bets. The basic bets will also help you to get an imaginary view of how the combination of odds and stakes contributes for each bet.

Basic tip #3: Bet only on the sports you follow and which result you believe you could predict. These are usually your most favourite sports and the good thing is that the English sports betting market is quite developed. You can bet on just about everything from the World Cup to snooker and UK motorsports.

Advanced tip #1: Put the highest of your bets on the biggest sports events that take or are about to take place very shortly, usually in hours. Take a pick of the biggest events that are popular worldwide, such as The Ryder Cup that is a major golf tournament from 28 to 30 September this year. Only in this way, you can take full advantage of a much wider range of possible bets. Varieties include ’Points Match-Ups’, ‘Top European Wild Card’, etc. And the bets usually go high. Really wild!

UK sports bettingAdvanced tip #2: Follow the new trends and always be on top. For example, bet on American football! There are rumours that it will become a great opportunity for UK bookies and punters, too. Another common trend is the recent interest in world-renowned brands to promote their products not just by sport, but also via sports betting.

Advanced tip #3: Make a chart for the odds of your past bets. Also, I would suggest including both ways of displaying the odds. When you have them in decimal and in fraction, you could easily see how they turned out and what is the type of your most winning bets. That’s the key to become able to spot value and therefore to organize your bets more reasonably.

There you have it – a list with 3 of my top tips and tricks for both pro and newbie punters. Share this post if you like it and stay tuned for more!
